Annecy - The Venice of the Alps

Nestled in the heart of Haute-Savoie, between lake and mountains, the city of Annecy is one of the most iconic destinations in southeastern France. Its exceptional geographical location, in close proximity to Switzerland and not far from Italy, makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the Alps and Alpine Europe. Annecy is located approximately 40 km from Geneva, Switzerland, and 100 km from Lyon, while being surrounded by a remarkable natural environment: a large, crystal-clear freshwater lake bordered by Alpine massifs, and an old town crisscrossed by picturesque canals, earning it the nickname "Venice of the Alps." A bit of history: Annecy boasts a rich history dating back to the Gallo-Roman period, when the city of Boutae was established in the region. In the Middle Ages, it became the capital of the Counts of Geneva, and later passed successively into the hands of the House of Savoy. In 1535, in response to the Reformation, the episcopal seat was transferred to Annecy, marking a flourishing period of religious and cultural development. The city became definitively part of France in 1860 with the annexation of Savoy. The cobbled streets, colorful houses, and the famous Palais de l’Isle (a former prison in the middle of the Thiou River) still tell the story of this fascinating medieval history, attracting visitors from all over the world. Practical information: Since January 1, 2017, the new municipality of Annecy has been created by the merger of six former municipalities: Annecy, Annecy-le-Vieux, Cran-Gevrier, Meythet, Pringy, and Seynod. Today, this large municipality covers approximately 67 km² and has nearly 130,000 inhabitants, making it the most populous city in Haute-Savoie. Lake Annecy Just next door, Lake Annecy is one of the cleanest lakes in Europe. Nearly 14.6 km long and covering approximately 27 km², it offers a wide range of exceptional activities: swimming, sailing, paddleboarding, walking around the lake, or simply relaxing on its beaches. Annecy is now known not only for its spectacular scenery, but also for its vibrant cultural scene (Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Lake Festival, Venetian Carnival, etc.) and its friendly atmosphere that appeals to visitors from all walks of life.

Sevrier

Located on the western shore of Lake Annecy, the town of Sevrier enjoys an exceptional setting, nestled between the lake's crystal-clear waters and the verdant slopes of the Semnoz mountain. Just a few minutes from Annecy, Sevrier charms visitors with its peaceful atmosphere, its art of living, and its immediate proximity to nature, while remaining perfectly connected to the vibrant life of Annecy. Sevrier's long history, deeply intertwined with Lake Annecy, dates back to the Gallo-Roman period, when it was known as Sevriacus. Long before that, the lake's shores were already inhabited, as evidenced by the prehistoric stilt villages, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These remains remind us that Lake Annecy has always been a place of life, exchange, and resources. Over the centuries, Sevrier has remained a town on a human scale, long focused on agriculture and lakeside life, while preserving a strong village identity. The Semnoz, an iconic mountain Dominating the town, the Semnoz is a major feature of Sevrier's landscape and identity. Accessible year-round, this mountain offers a prime playground: exceptional hiking and panoramic views in summer, Nordic activities and family skiing in winter, and spectacular vistas of Lake Annecy, the Bauges mountains, and Mont Blanc. The Semnoz perfectly embodies the balance between unspoiled nature and outdoor recreation, so cherished by residents and visitors alike. Sevrier today: a thriving town In recent years, Sevrier has experienced harmonious development while carefully preserving its quality of life. The town welcomes new local shops, restaurants, services, and infrastructure, all contributing to a vibrant and welcoming community. Highly valued for its quality of life, Sévrier attracts both families and visitors seeking tranquility, nature, and authenticity, all while remaining just minutes from the center of Annecy. Bike paths, developed beaches, and pedestrian walkways reinforce this natural connection between the lake, the village, and the mountains. Practical information: Sevrier covers an area of approximately 12.65 km², with an altitude ranging from 440 meters to 1,287 meters. It is part of the Greater Annecy metropolitan area and currently has between 4,000 and 4,200 inhabitants, known as Sevriolains and Sevriolaines. A way of life between lake and mountains: Sevrier embodies a unique, gentle way of life, where people take the time to enjoy the lake, the mountains, and simple pleasures. It is an ideal starting point to discover the region, recharge your batteries and fully experience Lake Annecy, away from the hustle and bustle, but at the heart of what is essential.
